GDM Megaron, was built in the mid 30’s by the commercial enterprise Fytaki-Kasapaki, who were traders in citron which was at its peak at that time. Its foundations were built on the seaside Venetian walls “Cortina Dei Consiglieri”.
Fytaki-Kasapaki made a huge profit by selling Citron to England, for the traditional Christmas Pudding. They decided to construct the Megaron, after being very profitable in the Citron Business. However, their ambitious plan to create their own autonomous plant of sweet peel was boycotted by competing industries which purchased their produce from Corsica. Shortly after, an incurable disease of the citron tree, Phyloxera contaminated the trees of the area and destroyed them completely.
All the prominent Heraklion families resided in the Megaron. Its ground floor housed the Heraklion society where affluent residents, government representatives and commercial trading houses gathered. Dance evenings, social gatherings and charity events were held there. Towards the end of WWII, the building was severely damaged from an explosion in a German Vessel. The building was renovated in recent years, and operates as a hotel since November 2003.

Built in 1925 and classified as a monument, the GDM Megaron is located in the heart of Heraklion, overlooking the old Venetian port and within walking distance of all the major sights of the city. The “Plaza Café” is a casual, all day, all-purpose indoor café ideal for enjoying your breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee overlooking the old port. “The Living Room” lounge is the ideal sitting area located between the two atriums of the hotel, providing a TV corner and a library. “The Megaron 5th” Bar Restaurant is located on the top floor, offering the city’s most stunning views of the old Venetian port and the Aegean Sea. It provides a unique combination of an excellent location, lounge music and contemporary Cretan cuisine with carefully selected dishes prepared by the hotel’s artisan Chef. “The Megaron 5th” is open only during the summer season.

The Health Club on the 4th floor, exclusively reserved for hotel guests, is equipped with a variety of fitness equipment as well as a steam bath, a hot tub, a massage table and a sauna with colour and music therapy. The sun beds and umbrellas by the pool area on the roof are perfect for relaxing after a busy day.

The GDM Megaron staff is at guests’ disposal around the clock, providing twice daily maid service, room service and courteous concierge assistance. Well-equipped meeting rooms are the ideal venue for meetings whether it is a seminar, a cocktail reception, a gala dinner or even an exhibition.

GDM Megaron is located in the heart of Heraklion's business and shopping district, within walking distance of the Archaeological and the Historical Museum. Heraklion Port is 2 km away, while Heraklion International Airport is within 5 km of the hotel.
