    【国宝】登録名称は「東大寺南大門」…現在の門は鎌倉時代、東大寺を復興した重源上人が再建したもので、今はない鎌倉再建の大仏殿の威容を偲ばせる貴重な遺構である。上棟は正治元年(1199)、建仁３年(1203)には門内に安置する仁王像とともに竣工した。屋根裏まで達する大円柱18本は、21ｍにも及び、門の高さは基壇上25.46ｍもある。大仏殿にふさわしいわが国最大の山門である。

    東大寺のお土産は大仏殿の中でも数多く販売されていますが、私のオススメは東大寺が時々記念行事に際して製作する散華です。散華は法要時に撒かれる蓮の花の形をした台紙ですが、南都の各寺では、記念散華を作り販売することがあり、その中でも東大寺は特に記念散華がよく作られる寺なのです。作品を依頼された作家の感性溢れるデザインも楽しみの一つ。大仏殿の帰り際、回廊にある売り場で入手できます。
